Nikolas “Nick” Gabriel Markovich, resident of Spirit River, AB, passed away on Wednesday, March 16, 2022, at the Grande Prairie Regional Hospital, at the age of 80 years.
Nick was born at home on the farm near Rycroft, AB, on March 24, 1941. He was the youngest of 9 children born to John and Mary (Pavelic) Markovich. After high school, he went to Calgary, AB, to attend SAIT in the Heavy-Duty Equipment Mechanic program. After graduating, he worked for Dave Ross Equipment until 1974, when he joined his eldest brother Tony to operate the family farm.
In 1966, he married the love of his life, Ruth. For the next 55 years, Nick and Ruth lived in Spirit River where they raised their 2 children and were active members of their community.
When not farming, Nick spent time curling, golfing, coaching hockey or being a member of MD council and Seed Cleaning association. Nick had a natural talent for music and was well known for his remarkable singing voice. He could fill any setting with his rich, strong baritone which was compared by many to the best in the world. Some remember his performances in the Dawson Creek Symphonette Operetta productions, and many others remember him with his guitar singing a variety of fun and light-hearted songs. Memories of his powerful voice and his kind gentle spirit will live in the hearts of those who love him always.
Nick will be sadly missed by many but especially by his wife Ruth; children Brian (Amanda) Markovich and Lisa (Mark) McCaffrey; as well as grandchildren: Courtney, Spencer, Liam and Lucas.
Nick was predeceased by his parents John and Mary Markovich; siblings: Anne (Lester) Hemmingway, Tony, Edith (Mike) Baric, Mary, John, Barbara (Andrew) Stanich, Matilda (Paul) Loroff, and Paul (Liz); nephews: Ken Stanich and Paul Hemmingway; niece Marjorie (Stanich) Janssen, as well as great-niece Nicole Hemmingway.
A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, April 16, 2022, at 11:00am, at Centennial Hall in Spirit River.
Interment to follow at the Spirit River Cemetery. All that loved Nick are welcome.
