It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear husband and father, Victor Albert Baier, on March 14, 2022 in Grande Prairie, Alberta at the age of 82 years.
Victor was born in Compeer, Alberta on October 11th, 1939. He was the oldest of 11 children born to George and Rose Baier. He often recounted fond memories of his childhood time spent with his brothers and sisters. He worked as a telegrapher and station agent with both CPR and Via Rail. Victor married Shona MacDonald in 1970 in Medicine Hat, where their two daughters joined their family in 1979 and 1981. Subsequently, Victor and his family moved to Edmonton in 1986 to continue his career with Via Rail until his retirement in 1994. He was then afforded the opportunity to pursue his true passion, which was farming and raising bison. Victor was incredibly proud of his bison farm in Fourth Creek, Alberta, which he affectionately named Kasa Rose Bison.
Victor was a humble and talented man. He was a passionate self-taught artist who had a special talent in painting and carving beautiful, lifelike bird statues. He was an active outdoorsman who loved fishing, farming and walking. He could spend hours outdoors observing birds and wildlife or searching for arrowheads, rocks and plants. The family has many special memories of spending this time with him.
In addition to his many beloved solitary pursuits, Victor was always ready to help his family, friends and neighbors. He showed his generosity and kindness through his actions in a quiet and unassuming manner, never seeking recognition or accolades.
Victor will be forever remembered by his wife, Shona; daughters Kathleen (Grant) Perreault and Sarah (Shane) Metrunec; grandchildren Rosemary Metrunec and Clara Perreault; brothers and sisters Leonard (Claudia), Henry (Marguerite), Garry (Laura), Ron (Anita), Mary Jane (Morris) Lowis, Arlene Voeller, Coreen (Hal) Stuart, Jeff (Louanne) and Jack (Marianne); sister in law Margaret Baier; as well as Shona’s siblings Ian and Terry and their families. He is also lovingly remembered by his many nieces, nephews, friends and extended family. Victor was predeceased by his parents, George and Rose Baier, brother Dennis Baier and sister in law Audrey Baier.
In his final days on earth Victor knew how much he was loved and cherished. He had his wife and daughters at his bedside during his illness and hospitalization. Although Victor could not speak, we shared tears, smiles and memories. We took comfort in knowing that he was not in pain or discomfort during his final days.
We look forward to gathering with family and friends in Victor’s memory at a memorial luncheon and interment at Mount Carmel Cemetery in Altario, Alberta at a date to be announced.
