With very sad hearts we announce the passing of a son, brother, father, and grandfather, David Kowalchuk.
Dave was born in Spirit River, Alberta on April 14, 1956 to parents Victor and Jean Kowalchuk. He passed away after a battle with cancer at the age of 65 years on July 8, 2021 at Prairie Lake Hospice in Grande Prairie.
Dave was the eldest of four children. He attended Blueberry Creek School for his elementary grades and high school in Spirit River. After working at several jobs, he decided mechanics was for him. He apprenticed at Doug Marshall Motor City in Grande Prairie and received his journeyman automotive licence while working there.
He married Lydia Paranteau in 1975 and during the time of their marriage had two sons, Christopher and Adam.
His parents had started V & J Small Engine Repair shop in Spirit River and Dave decided he would like to work with them and do the quality repair work that he was known for. Dave and his family then moved to Spirit River to be closer to his work. He worked at V & J for 25 years until back problems prevented him from continuing.
Dave then moved to Clairmont and after his back surgery, worked at Countryside Motor Sports in Grande Prairie for a couple years as a service manager, but his real love was repairing. He took a job at Northern Metalic Sales in Grande Prairie as their mechanic where he worked for several years until his health started failing.
Dave’s favorite activities involved anything to do with working on cars and motorcycles and mechanical tinkering in general. He also loved spoiling all of his grandchildren over the years and spending time skiddooing, quadding, fishing and having fun with his kids and their families.
He leaves to mourn his passing his son Adam Kowalchuk (Mareike) and grandchildren Jaden and Gage; grandchildren Jessica and Seianna (Christopher’s children); stepchildren Nick Scorda (Stacey) and Angela Scorda-Jodoin (Denis) and grandchildren Cade, Brea, and Alex. He is also survived by his mother Jean Kowalchuk; sister Karen Graunke (Bill); sister Kim Berry (Joe); brother Greg Kowalchuk (Janette); nephews Paul Berry, Randy Kowalchuk and niece Adrionna Kowalchuk (Randy), aunt Zel Shalagan and numerous cousins. He is also survived by the mother of his children, Lydia Kowalchuk.
Dave was predeceased by his son, Christopher, his father Victor, his infant sister Mary, past partner Carol Scorda as well as grandparents and many uncles, aunts and cousins.
The family wishes to thank Angela for her dedicated support during Dave’s illness as well as Dave’s lifelong friends Jim and Judy Smith, and close friends Brenda, Ingrid and Ron for their help and support. Apologies to others if their names have been missed.
Special thanks to staff at the Prairie Lakes Hospice for their exceptional care, the QEII Hospital doctors and staff who took care of Dave on several occasions and the QEII cancer clinic.
As per Dave’s wishes, there will be no funeral.
