On April 7, 2020 Paul Markovich of Cold Lake passed away at 82 years of age. Paul was born February 11, 1938 in Rycroft, AB to Croatian immigrants John and Mary Markovich. The eighth of nine children, Paul’s childhood was spent both working on the family farm and at school. After graduation, he first attended the University of Montana studying Forestry, and later studied Botany at the University of Alberta, ultimately obtaining a degree in Education.
Thus began a decades-long career as a teacher and principal. In 1969 he met a young Australian nurse, Liz Johnson, immediately falling in love and marrying that November, after which three children quickly followed.
As a teacher he made a difference in many lives and was a caring and inspiring educator, continuing as a substitute after retirement. The loss of his wife in 1999 was a tragic blow, but he drew comfort from his 6 grandchildren and loving partner Maureen Young, all of whom were with him until the end.
Paul will be lovingly remembered by partner Maureen Young of Cold Lake, daughter Rhonda (Petko) Mandev, of Coquitlam, BC, sons Lyle (Heather Innes) and Gerald (Collette), both of Edmonton, grandchildren Ilian, Emily, Ava, Henry, Geena & Neil, brother Nick (Ruth) Markovich of Spirit River, sisters-in-law Reita Markovich and Dorothy Markovich, in-laws Peter (Frances) Wallace (Melbourne), Cas (Manette) Johnson (Canberra) and Lynn (Margaret) John (Swansea), and numerous nieces and nephews.
Paul was predeceased by his parents, wife Elizabeth, siblings Ann, Tony, Edith, Mary, John, Barbara, and Matilda.
At Paul’s request a Graveside service will be held at a later date in Spirit River, Alberta. Cremation has taken place.
Memorial tributes in memory of Paul may be sent to Cold Lake Palliative Care Society, PO Box 1505, Stn Main, Cold Lake, AB T9M 1P4 or email: firstname.lastname@example.org.
